FANE-UiSThe 2018-2020 work programme puts a strong focus on the European Commission’s political priorities:
- A low-carbon, climate resilient future: €3.3 billion
- Circular Economy: €1 billion
- Digitising and transforming European industry and services: €1.7 billion
- Security Union: €1 billion
- Migration: €200 million
€2.2 billion will be dedicated for clean energy projects.
Other highlights of the 2018-2020 programme:
- Supporting breakthrough, market-creating innovation. The Commission is launching the first phase of the European Innovation Council as continuation of support for innovative entrepreneurs. €2.7 billion from Horizon 2020 is dedicated to support high-risk, high-gain innovation to create the markets of the future. Better use of the H2020 "crack the challenge" prizes to deliver breakthrough technology solutions to pressing problems is planned.
- Supporting excellent science. During the period of 2018-2020 support for 'curiosity-driven science' ('blue sky science' or 'frontier research') will be maintained. To support excellent researchers €1.86 billion is available under The European Research Council Work Programme. Under Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions, providing support for researchers at all stages of their careers, €2.9 billion is allocated for the years 2018-2020.
- Enhancing international cooperation. The Work Programme will strengthen the international cooperation. €1 billion in 30 flagship initiatives is dedicated for this purpose.
- Spreading excellence. €460 million is dedicated to support Member States and associated countries that do not fulfill their potential in the H2020. The aim is to enhance pockets of excellence in and outside Europe. Synergies with European Structural and Investment Funds will be promoted.
- Simplifying rules of participation further. The Commission is introducing the lump-sum pilot with the aim to simplify administration processes under H2020.
- Open Science. The focus is shifted to sharing knowledge in the research process. €2 billion will be allocated to support Open Science, and €600 million will be dedicated to the European Open Science Cloud, European Data Infrastructure and High Performance Computing.
