SIGN UP! “Getting Your Message Across” – Course in communication skills for PhD candidates at UiS, 26th September 2018.

The aim of this one-day programme is to help the participants deliver their presentation message in an interesting and lively manner so that it is clear to the audience. The focus will be on communication techniques, the use of different media in order to deliver your message and the English Language.

All PhD candidates at UiS are welcome to sign up for our new course in communication skills “Getting Your Message Across”.

Date: 26th September 2018, 09.00 – 16.00, including lunch.
Location: Arne Rettedals hus, room T-401 (4th floor)

Course fee: Free for PhD candidates at UiS

Presence is expected for the entire duration of the course, and you will be required to deliver a small pre-course work in English consisting of six questions when applying for the course. The maximum number of participants is 12, and we process the applications on a first come, first served principle. The deadline of application is Wednesday 12th September 2018.

Our course instructor, Louise Rankin, has trained our PhD candidates for several years, and former participants have given her and the course very good feedback. Her background in Linguistics, Psycholinguistics, Neuro-Linguistic Programming and Speech Therapy has focused her training on communication skills and personal development.

The course language is English.

Course content:

  • What is your theme?
  • What is the punch line?
  • Who are you telling your story to?
  • How and where do you want to tell it? Posters? Story Boards? Presentations?
  • Creating a Clear Purpose Statement
  • Keeping your Message to the Point
  • Practising Clear Pronunciation of Essential Wording
  • Developing the Art of Words and Language
  • Verbal Linking and Audience Involvement

Course methods:

The participants are asked to work individually and in pairs on aspects of their own presentations. They will also be asked to perform short exercises on extracts of their own presentations to practice their verbal delivery.
