ECIU’s Executive Board with new speaker

Helen Dannetun, vice-chancellor of Linköping University, was elected as speaker of the Executive Board of the European Consortium of Innovative Universities (ECIU) at the consortium’s board meeting that took place in Dublin on May 22 and 23.

Dr Dannetun is a professor of physics who has held several roles in the context of Swedish higher education, including serving on the board of directors for the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research and as a leading technical advisor to the Swedish Ministry of Education.

Her election comes after the appointment of the former speaker, Anne Flierman, as chair of the Dutch Flemish accreditation organization (NVAO), a position he took up as of May 1st this year. Anne Flierman had served as the speaker of the ECIU Executive Board since June 2008.

In recent times the ECIU has focused its orientation towards policy-making in the European Union (EU) context, especially as negotiations of the EU budget for 2014-2020 entered into a crucial phase at the beginning of 2013, calling for the EU heads of State "to uphold the proposed budgets for Horizon 2020 and Erasmus for All", stating that these programmes are "fundamental to generate the science & technology, human capital and innovation potential that will be the basis of Europe's future".

The University of Stavanger is a member of ECIU since 2012.
