Entry to the USA requires preregistration as of 12 January 2009

As of 12 January 2009 everyone traveling to the USA WITHOUT a visa must register electronically prior to departure.

This implies that Norwegian nationals and other nationals who qualify for the Visa Waver Program (VWP) traveling to the USA for business or pleasure without a visa but with a machine-readable passport must register on the internet at the latest 3 days prior to their departure.

Until now, nationals from countries included in the VWP, amongst others Norwegians, were required to complete the green form I-94W with personal and travel information on their way to the USA. With the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) the same type of information is registered before departure.

Once you have completed the on-line registration form it is valid for two years and you are free to enter and exit the USA as often as you please. The service has been offered since 1 August this year and will be made mandatory as of 12 January 2009. The registration does not require specific travel plans. In order to prevent stress immediately prior to your travel we recommend that everyone envisaging travel to the USA within the next two years should register now.

ESTA does not effect travelers to the USA WITH a visa. They do not need to register on-line.
