SIGN UP! "Getting Your Message Across" - Course in communication skills for PhD candidates at UiS, 5th September 2017

All PhD candidates at UiS are welcome to sign up for our new course in communication skills “Getting Your Message Across”.

The aim of this one-day programme is to help the participants deliver their presentation message in an interesting and lively manner so that it is clear to the audience. The focus will be on communication techniques, the use of different media in order to deliver your message and the English Language.

Course content:

What is your theme?

What is the punch line?

Who are you telling your story to?

How and where do you want to tell it? Posters? Story Boards? Presentations?

Keeping your Message to the Point

Practising Clear Pronunciation of Essential Wording

Developing the Art of Words and Language

Verbal Linking and Audience Involvement

Making the Audience Keen to Know your Conclusion

Course methods:

The participants are asked to work individually and in pairs on aspects of their own presentations. They will also be asked to perform short exercises on extracts of their own presentations to practice their verbal delivery. Group feedback will be given together with additional comments from the trainer.

Presence is expected for the entire duration of the course, and you will be required to deliver a small pre-course work in English consisting of answering six questions by 1st September 2017.

Our course instructor, Louise Rankin, has trained our PhD candidates for several years, and former participants have given her and the course very good feedback.
