E-mail correspondence in the workplace: A case study of a Norwegian university

Associate professor of English Linguistics Milica Savic is conducting a research study addressing the issues of e-mail communication in English in the workplace, specifically at the University of Stavanger, and would like to invite you to consider participating in the study.

Since the University of Stavanger offers a number of MA and BA programmes in English, employs foreign lecturers, and prioritises internationalisation in its Institutional Strategy, a significant part of e-mail communication within the university is conducted in English. The aim of the current study is to investigate the ways in which English is used to establish social relationships in workplace e-mail communication, and the ways English is used to transfer information and achieve other work-related goals. The focus will be on communication between faculty members, faculty members and students, faculty members and administration staff, and administration staff and students. Additionally, the influence of age and gender as macro-social variables will be investigated

What does participation in the project involve?

Three main sources of data will be used in this project: e-mails written and received by employees at the university, quantitative data obtained by means of a questionnaire and qualitative data obtained through interviews. If you decide to participate in the project, you can determine the level of your own participation. For instance, you could only give Milica access to some of your e-mails in English, which she can later use for analysis, or you can only agree to be interviewed or fill in a questionnaire or all of the above. All the arrangements will be made to fit your schedule.

All the information collected will be treated confidentially and will only be used for research and teaching purposes. Whenever the data from this study are presented and published, your identity will be kept anonymous and pseudonyms will be used. The project has been approved by NSD Personvernombudet for forskning. The project is scheduled for completion by December 2021. Three to four articles focusing on different aspects of the data collected through this project will be published.

Voluntary participating

Participating in this study is strictly voluntary. If at any point you change your mind and no longer want to participate, you can withdraw from the study. If you have any questions about the study, you can contact Milica at: milica.savic@uis.no

If you sometimes/often/always receive and write e-mails in English at work, and would like to participate in the project, please contact Miliza at milica.savic@uis.no . Further information about the project will be provided for potential participants.
